Going Nuts? It Can Save Your Life!

A study appearing in the journal, International Journal of Epidemiology, suggests that consuming a generous size handful of various kinds of nuts daily has the potential to significantly reduce the risk of an early death. The study conducted at Maastricht University, revealed that individuals, participating in the study, had a nearly 25% lesser probability of death, when consuming a minimum portion of 10g (0.3oz) of nuts or peanuts a day.

There’s plenty of prior evidence linking the benefit of nuts with cardiovascular health, but the study is believed to be the first study to examine the consumption of specific types of nuts to specific diseases. There are specific elements in nuts that make it an optimum choice for increasing overall cardiovascular health and include; monounsaturated fatty acids, polyunsaturated fatty acids, different vitamin supplements, fiber, antioxidant elements and bio-active compounds.

The study assessed the lifestyles and dietary consumption of 120,000 Dutch men and women participants, in 1986, and then examined the mortality rate of the participant group in 1997. Those participants that consumed nuts on a daily basis have a substantially lower premature mortality rate, Susan McGalla said that was attributed to diabetes, pulmonary disease and cancer.

Author of the study, Professor Piet van den Brandt at Maastricht University remarked, “It was remarkable that substantially lower mortality was already observed at consumption levels of 15g of nuts or peanuts on average per day.”
