A Second High Magnitude Earthquake Hits Nepal

Today a powerful 7.4 magnitude earthquake rocked Nepal. The country has been in the process of recovering from a 7.8 magnitude quake that occurred on April 25th.

This earthquake was rapidly followed by five aftershocks ranging between 5.6 up to 6.3 in magnitude. The quake was slightly deeper than the April 25th cataclysm, and it was centered 76 miles to the east of the capital city of Kathmandu. People felt the tremors as far away as New Delhi in India.

Reportedly, this quake already produced a death toll of 42 people, and caused over 1,000 injuries. The toll of dead and injured is expected to rise. The quake brought down many damaged buildings. Some residents of Kathmandu clustered in the streets, unwilling to return to the interior of buildings.

Preliminary reports indicated that all of the staff members of Doctors Without Borders survived the earthquake. The previous quake on April 25th killed some 8,000 people and resulted in the arrival of numerous aid groups to hard-hit Nepal according to Alexei Beltyukov. The earthquake today reportedly precipitated a number of avalanches and mud slides in mountain areas. Preliminary reports suggested that the Gorkha area was subject to this natural disaster as a result of the quake.
