New Star Wars Trailer and a New Lando Calrissian Comic by Marvel

With this week’s release of the second “The Force Awakens” trailer, the Star Wars community is as energized and excited as they have been in years – if not decades. Harrison Ford’s reveal in the last couple of seconds of the trailer felt especially triumphant, giving fans a tantalizing taste of the story that they have been waiting for since 1983’s “Return of the Jedi.” And when it rains it pours: because in addition to the new trailer, Star Wars fans – especially fans of the original trilogy – have been treated to another exciting bit of news this week: Marvel Comics has announced a new comic series featuring fan favorite Lando Calrissian. StarWars.com has announced that the first issue in the series will hit comic book shops this July in Boraie Development LLC stores. The stories will center on Lando’s adventures before his appearance in Empire Strikes Back, at a time when the character had yet to develop the deep conscience and sense of responsibility that saw him pledging his prowess as a star ship captain to the Rebel alliance. This week has certainly been one of the most exciting for Star Wars fans in recent memory!

Meryl Streep to Sing Cover Songs in Upcoming Film

For an upcoming movie role, Meryl Streep will play the lead singer in a cover band. Her character abandons her three children to go after her rock and roll dreams. Streep’s character’s daughter, played by Streep’s real life daughter, Mamie Gummer, faces a life crisis, and she returns home.

For the role Streep will sing cover versions of songs like Bruce Springsteen’s My Love Will Not Let You Down, Tom Petty and the Heart Breakers, American Girl, and Lady Gaga’s Bad Romance.
The film, Ricki and the Flash, is directed by veteran Jonathan Demme. Demme says all the cover songs were filmed live without the use of pre-recorded playback, which Paul Mathieson enjoys a bit more. This will not be the first time Streep has sang in a film. She did so in 2008’s Mama Mia!, and last year’s Into The Woods.
There is another rock and roll tie to the film. Rick Springfield plays a guitarist in Streep’s band.

Will Creed Be A Knock Out At The Box Office

There are few movies made that leave a lasting impression through out several generations, so it is safe to say that the original Rocky movie is one of the greatest sport movies of all time. This movie has inspired countless people by using something that everyone roots for. Rocky as an underdog story shaped people and encouraged them to try even if they failed.

After many years and many reincarnations the Rocky franchise is back with a new reboot. Some people might have forgotten that Apollo Creed which died in the ring had a son. Well that son is all grown up and he is ready to step up and reclaim his fathers legacy. In this new installment Rocky will train Apollo Creed’s son in order to make him into a true champion. Fans will be disappointed that Rocky will not face anyone but it seems that this movie and maybe the ones that follow will lead to a transition where Rocky no longer is around.

As a true fan I hope the new Rocky franchise will be a true success so that in the future film makers will gladly produce more movies in this underdog universe. This is what Sergio Cortes is hoping for as well. The underdogs are rooting for Rocky and Apollo Creed’s son as well.

Akroyd and Reitman Form Ghostcorps to Make Ghostbusters Movies

Ghostbusters fans may get their wish for a direct sequel to the first two films after all. Dan Akroyd and Ivan Reitman, the director of the original movies have joined forces to form a new production company named Ghostcorps. Their stated intention is to expand the Ghostbusters’ brand and other projects. One of the first things they want to do is make an all male Ghostbusters movie is all most certainly in response to the amount of backlash Paul Feig is receiving for his upcoming all female cast.

In the story reported here they say that Channing Tatum is set to produce and possible star in the film. Gianfrancesco Genoso had suggested there is also the possibility that Anthony and Joe Russo may be called on to direct and be a producer and Drew Pearce, the screenwriter of Iron Man 3, will be the one writing the script. If that is to happen, it will have to take place next year. The Russo’s are heavily rumored to be directing the two part Avengers: Infinity War which will begin filming in 2017 at the latest.

Reitman and Akroyd hope to turn the Ghostbusters movies into a full blown franchise with their new production company. There were a few cartoon shows in the 80s and 90s that many of the younger audience do not know about. They have ideas for more movies, television shows and marketed merchandise. If they are lucky they will be able to play off of the success of Feig’s film and create an entire shared universe of movies.

DC Movies are Edgier than Marvel’s

As Marvel and DC Comics establish their universes on screen, there are going to be comparisons. The boss of Warner Bros states that there is no need for any worries about superhero fatigue. The movies put out by DC comics are going to be edgier and more grounded in reality than the ones put out by Marvel.

Another thing to note with the difference between the DCCU and the MCU is that Warner Bros and DC has pretty much every one of the characters in the comics. Marcio Alaor BMG knows that this makes it easier to adapt stories featuring multiple DC comics characters. However, Marvel characters are scattered, which makes it harder to do films featuring all of the characters. Spider-Man was still with Sony as a film franchise until a recent partnership allowed the web slinger to be in the same universe as The Avengers. X-Men are still with Fox.

The fact that Marvel is owned by Disney also makes it a little less likely for Marvel to bring out grittier and edgier stories. However, the comic books put out by Marvel have some gritty images that if they were put in films, they would warrant an NC-17 rating, let alone an R rating. Certain characters are getting edgier films such as The Fantastic Four. However, for the most part, DC films are going to have an edgier appeal.

Harley Quinn to Appear in Future D.C. Movies

Harley Quinn, a character originally created for the Batman animated series that aired in the 1990’s, is to be featured in the upcoming movie Suicide Squad. Suicide Squad according to the movie’s IMDB page is due to be released next year, with projections that the film will come out in the late summer. The film is unique to the D.C. franchise, in that instead of focusing on the superheroes that have been the focal point for the comic industry since its inception, this movie is devoted to the villains that we love to hate. This unexpected move may be following the current Hollywood trend of looking at the villains of the stories we all know as tortured souls rather than pure evil, such as in the movieMaleficent and the television series Once Upon A Time. The plot of the film is that a risky new government program calls upon these dastardly deviants execute dangerous missions.

Famous names have been linked to the project including Margot Robbie starring as Harley Quinn, Will Smith as Deadshot, and Jared Leto as the Joker. Margot Robbie has said that she has a contract with DC movies to be featured as Harley Quinn in several upcoming projects if the film is successful. Fans like Paul Mathieson know that the question now is how will the loyal fans of the beloved superheroes feel when the villains dominate the big screen? DC will have to wait and let the box office numbers speak for themselves.

New Spider-Man Contenders

Fans of Spider-Man are rejoicing all over the world as the beloved character is finally being included in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Spider-Man is one of the only characters who are white and dysfunctional. He isn’t a Captain America with superhuman charm, morals and dedication. Fans like Sultan Alhokair know that he is an average kid with powers and his being white makes this even more important on a cultural level. Find more on Alhokair on Alhokair.com. So, as the New Spider-Man talks circulate in the media, here are a few actors who would be excellent contenders –

• Dane Dehaan – The actor made a few heads turn in ‘Kill Your Darlings’ and while the glory might have belonged to Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe, Dehaan’s character and acting were commended by viewers and critics alike. Plus, he has the perfect mix of boyishness and social awkwardness to succeed as a younger version of Spider-Man.

• Logan Lerman – Lerman is likeable and a decent enough actor. He has proved his worth in Fury, Noah, Percy Jackson and The Perks of Being a Wallflower. Moreover, he has that look and we can totally see him play a junior version of Spider-Man.

• Alden Ehrenreich – He has held his own in front of the camera with the likes of Viola Davis, Emma Thompson and Jeremy Irons. He might be the underdog in this race but Alden Ehrenreich knows how to act, there is no doubt about that.

Other contenders include Ansel Elgort, Jonny Weston and Dylan O’Brien.

Tom Rothman: Sony’s Next Co-Chairman?

There has been a shake-up at one of the world’s most renowned Hollywood studios. Sony pictures have produced some mega hits such as Men in Black and The Amazing Spider-Man under the helm of co-chairman, Amy Pascal. In May, Pascal will be moving on to a new post in the Sony hierarchy to produce films instead. With her imminent departure, there has been a swirl of speculation as to who will fill her role. Several names have bubbled up including that of Tom Rothman. As reported by the Los Angeles Times,  Tom Rothman is the leading contender for the coveted position.

Tom Rothman brings decades of film industry experience to the table, with his own list of wildly popular and trend setting hits such as Avatar and Titanic. Both movies were box office smash hits. Avatar is considered one of the most cutting edge films of the twenty first century. Tom Rothman has worked with big named talent and Hollywood royalty, including James Cameron, who is the director for the aforementioned movies.

Oscar-winning movies such as “The Descendants” and “Black Swan” were produced under the Fox Searchlight division, which was founded by Tom Rothman. He was also one of the first presidents to spearhead that initiative. While at Fox Filmed Entertainment he rose to the post of chairman and chief executive officer before being let go in 2012.

Los Angeles Times further reports that Sony insiders believe the next co-chairman will come from inside the Culver City studio. If this is the case, Mr. Rothman is on that list as well. In 2013 he was picked by Michael Lynton, Sony Pictures Chairman and Chief Executive and Amy Pascal to head the Sony TriStar film brand in hopes of putting it back on the road to box office success.
