When people think of breast cancer symptoms, they think of sudden lumps, skin discolorations, rashes, pain, swelling or pimples, sores or other wounds that do not heal. Yet, there is a little change in the surface of a breast that can also indicate that a woman, or man, has breast cancer: A dimple forms at the surface.
Yesterday, Wednesday, May 20, Facebook was abuzz with the story of a 42-year-old British woman, Lisa Royle, who may have saved her own life by going to the doctor after she noticed a dimple under her one breast.
On May 11, Royle posted a public note on Facebook that featured an image of the bottom side of her one breast and a bright red circle around a small indent at the surface of her skin. She wrote that she never thought she would post a “boob picture” on the social networking site, but she wanted to spread awareness before having her breast removed this Monday. She said that she only found the one dimple and that “very subtle dimples” underneath a breast are easy to miss.
As of May 21, the post has been liked and shared tens of thousands of times on Facebook with more than 40,000 likes and more than 70,000 shares.
Christian Broda has learned that other subtle signs of breast cancer include a change in breast shape, a change in skin texture and any nipple changes.
Protein rich diets, typical of the Western culture, coupled with fatty foods and low fiber, have been connected with increasing cancer risks in contrast to African diets of high fiber and low fat and protein. Published in Nature Communications and announced in Science Daily, a recent study substantiates the claim that high fiber diets significantly cut the risk of colon cancer.
The 4th common reason for death in the world, colon cancer has been linked to greater than 600,000 deaths annually. Garcia Dias is concerned because rates are highest in the Western part of the world, with African-Americans carrying the greatest risk. A study by the University of Pittsburgh and the Imperial College of London included a group of 20 African-Americans and 20 South Africans. They swapped diets for two weeks. The American group ended up with less colon inflammation and reduced markers for risk of cancer. The African participants had the reverse effect.
Study director, Stephen O’Keefe, Professor at the University of Pittsburgh stated that the studies that were conducted on Japanese immigrants to Hawaii indicated that it took one generation of the Western diet to increase the potential for colon cancer. As compared to these more recent findings of changes after two weeks, this emphasizes that it is not too late to make changes, no matter how long a less beneficial diet has been followed.
Wellness guru Belle Gibson has been exposed to be a liar and a crook. The 23-year-old was the mastermind behind a hoax that fooled millions by convincing them she healed herself from terminal brain cancer with holistic medicine.
Gibson’s cookbook “The Whole Pantry” was set to be released in the coming weeks, but an Australian newspaper changed her plans when they dug a little deeper into Gibson’s claims, they soon found out their suspicions were right, and Gibson was, in fact, not a cancer survivor, nor did she heal herself of any disease.
Gibson claimed she was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2009, and said she was given only months to live. She managed to build an empire around this made-up story with book deals, best selling apps, and a huge social media following. Now, Gibson admits it was all a hoax orchestrated for her own selfish purposes. Daniel Amen is disappointed, as are many others.
In a recent interview with Australian Women’s Weekly Gibson said, “I don’t want forgiveness, I just think [speaking out] was the responsible thing to do. Above anything, I would like people to say, ‘Okay, she’s human.'”
However, Gibson is about to find out what it’s like to be judged in the public court of opinion, while also possibly facing criminal charges for swindling investors and consumers out of a substantial amount of money.
The full interview can be read in the May issue of Women’s Weekly, which hits the shelves today, April 23rd.
A team of researchers at Carnegie Mellon University have developed a device that separates cancer cells from healthy by sound waves.
This is a microchip that, in theory, improves the diagnosis and treatment of cancer, in addition to deepen the research on metastasis, the leading cause of death in patients with this disease.
Bernardo Chua (organogold.com) has learned that the apparatus enables the sound waves to separate the existing cancer cells from hundreds of thousands of white blood cells, regardless of which are much less dense and smaller.
Thus, this development can replace the current techniques of genetic analysis of cancer.
Separating Cancer Cells With Sound Waves
The new technique, published in the journal “Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences” ( PNAS ), allows for analysis of cells up to 20 times faster than current methods.
Scientists have used the new test with real blood samples of three women with breast cancer, obtaining consistent results.
Moreover, the laboratory experiment with plasma samples prepared with low levels of cancer cells revealed that the device is capable of separating 83% of tumor cells.
New and very promising cancer drugs are being tested, but there is a catch – the new drugs pose other health threats and the drugs may not pass FDA approval.
The new cancer-fighting drugs contain powerful drugs that give cancer cells a one-two punch and remove it from the body. The drugs contain CAR T, chimeric antigen receptor T cells, plus a powerful antibiotic known as bispecifics. The two work in tandem to grasp cancer cells from within the body, hold onto them and administer a lethal dose of antibiotics to the cells and/or tumor. The CAR T increases the potency of the antibiotics, enabling them to literally melt away cancerous tumors and eliminate them from the body. These new cancer drugs have been able to melt away tumors from cancer patients that have already been though chemotherapy and other conventional cancer treatments without success.
The downside of cancer treatment using the CAR T drugs is the cost of close to half a million dollars per patient and the threat the drugs pose to other aspects of health. The new cancer drugs and the disintegrated tumor cells release inflammatory chemicals, called cytokines, into the bloodstream during treatment. These residual cytokines can cause fever, a change in blood pressure and rapid heartbeat. The cytokines can be life-threatening to a cancer patient who is already in a compromised state of health. People like Brian Torchin are encouraged by these new findings. More on Torchin is available on DigitalJournal.com.
