Melbourne attracts millions of tourists each year who come to experience the theaters, culture, shopping, tourist sites and cuisine that define it as one of the most energetic and multicultural cities in Australia. This is Australia’s second largest city and home to some of the country’s best museums and dining. Regardless of whether you are coming for business or pleasure, there is a huge range of budget Melbourne accommodation to meet your needs.
The two best known locations for Melbourne accommodation are the CBD and the bayside suburb of St Kilda. If you want to be close to the theaters and shopping, then the city center is for you. If you want to be close to the beach, then the Victorian beach resort of St Kilda is the pick of the bunch.
Chinatown is located in Melbourne’s CBD and there is a variety of budget Melbourne accommodation conveniently located there. Chinatown is centered on Little Bourke Street, which runs up from the Bourke Street Mall. It sprang up in the’50s amidst the Victorian gold rush. There are budget hotels and hostels in Chinatown are just a short walk from the main theater district and a stroll to Melbourne’s best shopping malls and arcades.
If you are staying in Melbourne accommodation in the city, then you are well placed to investigate the Crown Casino and Southbank just across the Yarra River. Wandering along Southbank and stopping for a rest at alfresco cafes is a great stress release. One of Melbourne’s best loved cafes, the Blue Train Cafe, is located at Southbank and offers yummy light meals at reasonable prices. On the weekends the Queen Victoria Market, just a short tram ride away, is a fantastic place to pick up souvenirs and indulge in a little shopping.
The CBD and St Kilda are linked by the tram line and easily accessible to each other. St Kilda started out in the’th century as a beach side resort for the upper middle class who came in droves to build their Victorian mansions there. The area retains the ambience of its Victorian beginnings and there is Melbourne accommodation that is located in restored century old mansions. These days St Kilda is much loved by tourists and locals for its beach side cafes and some of the best bakeries in the southern hemisphere.
One of Melbourne’s most famous and best loved landmarks is located in St Kilda – Luna Park. Since’12 this amusement park in the style of Coney Island, has been thrilling visitors with its rides and sideshow games. The laughing face that forms the facade of the park is an enduring image of Melbourne’s city landscape.
From your St Kilda Melbourne accommodation there is much to do from beach pursuits such as surfing, swimming and even kiteboarding to learning more about multiculturalism in Australia at the Jewish Museum of Australia. You can also easily access other areas of Melbourne with the efficient tram and bus network.
There are many different styles of budget Melbourne accommodation available both in Melbourne’s CBD and St Kilda. The two areas have a different ambience, but both will allow you to explore this beautiful and exciting city with ease and in comfort.

These days, there is only a very small percentage of the population that is Aboriginal (3%) Many have health problems or alcohol related problems. There are however still areas within Australia where Aboriginals abide by their old values and beliefs and it is a wonderful experience to spend some time with them. Sacred places such as Ayers Rock are steeped in Aboriginal tradition and as such are a good place to uncover the Aboriginal belief system.
Rock Art is the oldest of the Aboriginal Arts and can be found in places such as Ayers Rock and Kakadu National Parks as these are sacred Aboriginal lands. It is the dot paintings that are particularly popular with tourists and these are generally easy to find throughout Australia.
There are lots of places you can go to learn about the Aboriginal Culture. There is not room in this article to explore them all. Arnhem Land which is near Darwin in the top end of Australia is in my opinion the best place to go. Numbers are restricted to this sacred area so you can guarantee a less touristy approach. You really do get to appreciate the real culture and see real Aboriginals dot painting and making crafts. You can easily incorporate a day trip here as part of your trip to Darwin or Kakadu National Park and I highly recommend it. Remember that this area has defined seasons so only come here between May and October.
If you want to incorporate some Aborigine experience into the more visited areas try the blue mountains walkabout as part of your trip to Sydney. The Rocks Half Day Dreaming tour which is taken by an Aboriginal Elder, Margaret Campbell is also very good. Don’t forget a detour to the Olgas if you’re driving a four-wheel drive – they are a strange yet eerie sight that Aboriginals from this region hold sacred
